Lake Ronkonkoma is Suffolk County's largest freshwater lake. It is frequently closed for swimming due to the continuing presence of blue-green algae and has become a symbol of environmental neglect. In an effort to help reduce nitrogen loading and bacteria from entering the lake, the Suffolk County Department of Health Services as well as the Suffolk County Department of Public Works decided to upgrade their existing septic tank/cesspool system with a Norweco Hydro-Kinetic 1500 I/A OWT System and shallow drain field. Each of the Hydro-Kinetic components had to be rated for traffic loads so Roman Stone Systems produced each tank with heavy duty lids, floors and added additional reinforcing. The system consisted of a pretreatment tank, and anoxic tank, a three-compartment treatment unit and two biofilm reactor polishing units. These discharged into the shallow drain field that recharges the treated effluent into the upper soil layers where the soil is more biologically active.
At a ceremonial "First Flush" event on June 1, 2018, Steve Bellone, Suffolk Counties Executive stated "Advancing Suffolk County's wastewater infrastructure and reducing nitrogen pollution in our waterways is one of my administration's top priorities, Nitrogen is the single largest cause of degraded water quality and the installation of an advanced system at Lake Ronkonkoma County Park will help ensure our water is safe for generations to come."
